Taking your specialty medication on the road

If you have a condition that requires specialty medication, organizing in advance can take some of the anxiety out of trips and vacations.

If you’ve ever forgotten your swimsuit on a beach vacation, you know the importance of planning ahead when it comes to traveling. If you have a condition that requires specialty medication, organizing in advance can take some of the anxiety out of trips and vacations.

Talk to your doctor

Check with your physician about your travel plans. Make sure you have your provider’s contact information, including answering service phone numbers. Find out if you should have a letter from your provider that explains your need for medications and supplies.

Pack your bags

Make sure that your prescription medication has the pharmacy label intact and consider keeping your medication in your carry-on in case of travel delays or an unexpected situation.

Remember to bring your emergency information when traveling. This can include medical history, a list of allergies and a list of daily medications, as well as contact numbers in case you need to get in touch with your doctor or pharmacy.

Plane travel made easy

TSA Cares (855-787-2227) is a helpline for travelers with medical conditions or disabilities. They provide information about the screening process and programs that may be available for passengers with disabilities. You can also visit tsa.gov/travel.

Other considerations

Travel these days can be a lengthy process. Be sure to hydrate whenever possible and pack appropriate snacks.

Identify the hospital or medical center at your destination, in case you need assistance.

Traveling should be a fun, memory making experience. By planning ahead, keeping up with your medication shouldn’t get in the way of your dream vacation. For questions, contact Optum or your specialty pharmacist today. Now, all you need is that swimsuit.
